Freelancing is one of those things that everyone wants to try out, although not everyone has a clear idea about freelancing and how to get started. Getting that first client is no joke, it’s hard for sure. Although with this guide, I’m sure that you will be more than confident to start freelancing and make use of the resources that you have available.

Let’s get started now.

Freelancing is something that you can do regardless of which field you are in, although what is the meaning of freelancing?

A Freelancer is a person who pursues a profession without a long-term commitment to any one employer.

This means that you have a scope of expanding your business without being limited by anyone. It’s just you who you work for.

As a freelancer, you will be asked to work on features, given work about topics you might be inexperienced in, or you might have to work in companies you don’t like. It’s all a part of the game.

The main question is,

How do I get started?

Today, there are many freelancers out there who are marketing their skills on platforms like Upwork, freelancer.com, Fiverr, etc., although out of those many, only a handful actually land gigs.

The truth is that these platforms are now not as useful as they were before because the freelancers who will be bidding for work already have a lot of work history, hence have a lot higher chance of getting the job.

What you should be focusing on is your personal brand.

A personal brand depicts who you are. It acts as a proof of your skills and projects which shows that you have a talent.

If I’m a client, and I see someone who has an amazing number of followers on Instagram, where he primarily showcases what he builds, and I like what he builds, I would be more than happy to hire him to do my work if his rates equate to my budget.

Be that guy.

Build projects that you would love working on, work on your skills further, see how your projects help others, showcase your talent.

This helps you stand out from the crowd.

Remember one thing, freelancing is not a race, it’s a marathon. Getting clients is going to be hard, but you need to continuously try. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

This is the 30-day guide that I prepared for you:

Day 1–10: Prepare your posts. Make amazing videos about projects that you’ve made.

Day 10–20: Post these projects. Add compelling comments and be friendly with the audience that you attain. Reply to comments, and ask how people feel. Listen to others and use the constructive criticism that others give you for your own betterment. Keep learning, keep improving.

Day 20–30: The client hunt begins. Apply to as many jobs as you can, connect with as many potential clients as you can through LinkedIn, talk to as many people as possible, schedule calls, and learn from others in the same field. Don’t be hesitant to pay them if they want that, because their experience is worth far more than what money could buy.

The Client Hunt

Getting this part right is really important. Before jumping in, try to decide what kind of projects are you willing to work on, and what your niche is. If you’re into e-commerce development, talking to smaller businesses that might need improvements or an entire revamp of their e-commerce site is going to be ideal for you. If you have a niche prepared, you know whom to talk to, and hence you will not waste a lot of your time.

Hunting for clients is a lot about convincing. You’re not gonna convince them, they are going to convince themselves. You’re on their side. You are helping them get more from their money. Always remember that.

You definitely need to bypass a lot of objections, but the effort will be worth it.

After talking and trying to convince 100s of people, maybe 1 client will be convinced enough to buy from you.

There you go.

We only needed 1 for the month. Even if it is not much, don’t be hesitant to take up the work. If you do a great job, which you will, you’ll get a testimonial that is infinitely more valuable than money. That testimonial can be repurposed and used several times.

Caring about the client is one of the most important things that you can do. Most people are there just for the money, but understand this:

If you’re able to get 1 client, who has connections with 10 other potential clients, and this client loves your work, then he will definitely refer you to the other 10 clients as well.

If you just spend all your time marketing, and never create a good product, you’ll end up losing a lot of money instead of making a lot.

Start off by developing your skill and creating projects. Pick a niche. Make projects around that niche

Clients will definitely be attracted to you.
